SUMMARY
The School Bus Monitor is responsible for assisting bus drivers in providing on-going and emergency support to students (both ambulatory and non-ambulatory) while riding, loading and unloading the school bus to ensure the safety of all passengers. EQUIPMENT: Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required, when determined and/or appropriate.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist with the loading and unloading of students, including preschool students, wheelchair students, and special needs students and equipment.
- Receive/deliver preschool and special needs students from/to the teacher/aid at the school.
- Deliver and receive the child safely to and from the parent, guardian or person authorized by the parent in writing.
- Preschool and Special needs children who cross the roadway shall be escorted by the bus aide.
- Preschool and Special needs children shall not be left unattended at time of delivery.
- If the parent/guardian is not present upon delivery, the child shall be taken to a prearranged location.
- Report to the driver any behaviors or incidents that may affect the safety or well-being of special needs children riding the bus.
- Adhere to policies and procedures in maintaining appropriate student behavior.
- Assist children with special learning needs and physical handicaps.
- Maintain confidentiality of school related business.
- Operate mobility and other special needs equipment according to manufacturing guidelines.
- Respond appropriately to all exceptional needs of students.
- Administer first aid as required, and contact appropriate administrators in case of serious injury or illness.
- Exhibit a positive image as a representative of the Caverna Independent School District.
- Share the responsibility for checking the interior of the bus for children immediately after each route and when the bus is parked
- Performs any other duties as assigned by the Transportation Director, Supervisor and/or Superintendent.
QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Some knowledge and experience working with children.
Basic first aid procedures and methods.
Must be physically able to assist the driver with the safety, movement, management and care of the children boarding the school bus, leaving the bus and/or being transported.
Capable of communication and associating with children in a manner which fosters mutual respect.
Ability to:
Follow written and oral instructions quickly and accurately.
Handle sensitive and confidential information.
Verbally communicate with students and adults.
Understand the proper use of child restraint systems used for transporting students with special needs.
Safely operate a wheelchair hydraulic lift.
Assist students with patience and understanding.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, parents, associates and students.
Stay calm and in control during emergency situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
- Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
- Some climbing and balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling when needed.
- Will require more standing and walking than sitting.
- Must have an adequate range of motion in the upper extremities.
- Must be able to demonstrate and perform the emergency evacuation procedures.
- The job is performed in a motorized vehicle in all types of weather and traffic conditions.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Experience:
One year of experience as a bus monitor is preferred.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
License and Certificate Requirement
Certified in first aid and CPR (adult and child) preferred.
